TIPS FOR GOOD HEALTHY EATING

Good Eating

We love it, we hate it (or at least what it does to our waistline), but there's no escaping it. We all depend on food for survival. For some, it's their nemesis  with research suggesting that many South Africans have a less than rosy relationship with food. If you have found yourself in any of the following scenarios, it may be time to re-examine your eating habits.

People suffering from anorexia and bulimia have a strong need to control their food intake. So they sometimes work out complicated eating or exercising rituals, forcing themselves to be disciplined.
Shame and/or guilt about eating, usually accompanied by moodiness or depression, are typical symptoms of anorexia and bulimia, suggesting that eating disorders are ultimately related to a person's identity and self-esteem.Therefore,there is a need to deal with psychological issues as well as dietary ones.

People can be tempted to eat if they're happy.A whole spectrum of emotions can bring on the urge to eat.Try to identify the feelings that make you want food and always check whether you're eating on impulse rather than when you're really hungry.

TOP TIPS FOR GOOD HEALTHY EATING

  • Always read the label first.Avoid foods high in saturated fats, sugar, salt and preservatives.
  • Cook from scratch.A fresh diet based on varied home-cooked meals is healthier and more rewarding than takeaways.
  • Get at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day.
  • Eat mindfully.Slow down, savoir and enjoy your food. And be aware of eating when you're not hungry.
  • Eat slow energy-release fogs such as wholewheat bread and pasta. If you prefer white, combine it with a protein such as chicken, egg or tuna.
  • If you're aiming to lose weight, drop the kilos gradually.Crash dieting strains your system and can trigger diabetes.
